I boarded my horse at Shepard Stables for several months. The only reason I stopped was because my barn was built later in the year, so I was able to keep him at home. Libby and Shep took excellent care of him while he was there, including loving on him like he was one of their own horses. Shepard Stable is a no nonsense, laid back kind of place. If you're looking for a barn with a lot of drama, this is not the place to go. They do run a therapeutic riding program on the same facility and things can get a little hectic, however, there is always a place to ride. There are two arenas. The therapeutic riding classes are only held in the small arena, so the big one is always available for use by boarders. There is also a round pen. There are three dry lots available for horses, ponies, and minis. Everyone has access to grass when the weather cooperates. Horses on grain get brought in once or twice a day for feed depending on the needs of your horse. Overall, this is an excellent place to board your horse. My horse would still be there if I didn't have my own barn at home.
Coming here has been such a positive move for her. Libby very quickly honed in on balance issues my daughter has and recommended she be checked for scoliosis. She indeed had scoliosis and this was affecting her riding.
They always were telling us we owed money even though we were able to prove with our cancelled checks that they received the correct amount every month.
The only boarders that gave this barn a good rating were people who visited their horse less than once a month for an hour or so.
Once this issue was diagnosed, Libby was able to work more effectively to make her core stronger and improved her riding. My daughter has also become so much more confident as Libby pushes her to work harder when she thinks it will benefit my daughter.
We have been boarding our three horse's at Shepard Stables for the past 6 years and it has been an amazing experience. I never have to worry if the horse are being cared for when we can not make it up there. Libby and Shep have always went above what you would expect from a boarding stable. They treat our horses as if they were their own. I highly recommend this facility.
They offer to let you work off board for $10 for 3 to 4 hrs worth of work (feed hay, grain, clean out stalls, and run-in). The grounds are way over crowded. About 20 horses on a 4 acre pasture that is ankle deep in mud.
I have nothing but good things to say about this stable. I have boarded my mare there for two years. The owners care deeply about each animal and have very good knowledge of horses and their individual needs; and the therapeutic riding program makes for a very strong community. There are two nice outdoor arenas, a round pen, and lots of space to ride around outside of the arenas. I would definitely recommend this stable to anyone looking for a safe and comfortable place with a great community of caring and enthusiastic people.
My daughter has been riding at Shepard Stable for over a year, and has also participated in some classes through Therapeion Therapeutic when appropriate for her. We moved here from another stable where I had begun to question the safety and quality of the lessons she was receiving. My experience with horses has been very limited so I wasn't sure of my own instincts.
We boarded two horses here for three months and they both lost a lot of weight showing every single one of their ribs. Even after we asked them to throw them more hay, which they ran out of twice in 3 months, nothing changed. They would only feed about a flake and a half twice a day and water was empty for over a day on several occasions.Now that we moved the horses they are getting back to a healthy weight.
Over all a very sloppy disorganized business.
